Beauty and Social Support – The Perfect Wellbeing Mix

Wellbeing with NAAJA

In Wugularr and Barunga, General Manager Tracy Beesley has created an innovative way to keep her female clients engaged and looked after.

Last year, we started hairdressing days which were a roaring success! With no hairdresser closer than an hour’s drive away, it was a much-needed service as well as a fun afternoon activity.

This year, Tracy has worked with local social support organisations to deliver educational workshops but in a stroke of genius, combined these with beauty days to attract more women to attend.

North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA)

Our first visit was by the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) Community Legal Education Team. They came to Wugularr to share what they do and how they can help both ladies and men.

The workshop included domestic violence and DVDs, and rights and responsibilities with the Police.

These talks assist with addressing repeat offender barriers and domestic violence barriers within communities.

After the NAAJA presentation, the hair cutting and dying began!

Krisha and Lucy from NAAJA joined in, dying hair, building connections and answering questions.  It was awesome to see!

Thank you to NAAJA for getting involved and sharing your important work with our community.

SafeTALK NT

Our next visit was from Trish and Clare from SafeTALK NT who attended our Barunga ladies to talk about suicide prevention.

This is a really important topic that deeply affects many lives in a small community. The ladies were engaged and took away some valuable tips for spotting and supporting someone in need.

We combined the session with another hairdressing day, with the focus being hair drying and blow waves.

Trish acknowledged that being part of a suicide prevention workshop can be challenging. She commented that adding it to a hairdressing day helped the ladies relax and learn in a safe, supportive environment.

A Self-Care Pamper Day

Staying with the wellbeing theme, Tracy organised a pamper day for the Wugularr ladies.

They did face masks, a foot spa and painted their nails while having a yarn about self-care and looking after your body.

It was another successful afternoon and we’re looking forward to more hair and beauty days for our beautiful clients.
